Parramatta Eels centre Will Penisini has revealed he is relishing the opportunity to play with a chip on his shoulder, fully embracing the underdog tag that has followed both him and his team throughout the 2025 NRL season.
Penisini, 22, has emerged as a standout figure in a struggling Eels outfit, demonstrating leadership, consistency, and resilience amid mounting pressure.

With the team sitting outside the top eight and critics questioning their finals credentials, the Tongan international believes the underdog status is fuelling his motivation rather than weighing him down.
“People are quick to write us off, but that just lights a fire in me,” Penisini said at a midweek media session. “I love being underestimated. It gives me and the boys something to prove every week.”
Known for his powerful running game and defensive reliability, Penisini has been a rare constant for Parramatta in a turbulent season marred by injuries and inconsistency. Despite the setbacks, he remains upbeat and determined to lead by example, both on and off the field.
“We know we haven’t lived up to expectations yet,” he admitted. “But there’s still time, and the belief is strong inside the group. Everyone’s working hard to turn things around.”
Penisini also credited the coaching staff and senior players for fostering a resilient culture, particularly during challenging stretches. With a difficult run of fixtures ahead, he acknowledged the importance of maintaining belief and unity within the squad.
As one of Parramatta’s most promising young talents, Penisini’s maturity and mindset have drawn praise from coaches and commentators alike. His approach to adversity, particularly his willingness to embrace the underdog label, has resonated with fans and injected renewed hope into the club’s finals aspirations.
With the Eels aiming to defy expectations in the second half of the season, Penisini’s form and leadership may prove pivotal. And if his mindset is anything to go by, being the underdog could turn out to be their greatest weapon.
