Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has left the door open for a potential blockbuster code-switch by NRL superstar Nathan Cleary, amid swirling speculation about the Penrith Panthers playmaker exploring rugby union.
Speaking to media at Suncorp Stadium following Cleary’s commanding performance for New South Wales in their 18-6 State of Origin win over Queensland, Schmidt acknowledged the rumours while hinting at the playmaker’s union roots.
“I watched the State of Origin — he obviously went to Sacred Heart College in New Zealand, that’s Sean Fitzpatrick territory and very much a rugby school,” Schmidt remarked. “He might want to spread his wings and play another sport. At the same time, we’ve got a really good stock there that we’re focused on in the short term.”
The cross-code buzz was initially sparked by Wallabies legend Tim Horan, who on Stan Sport’s Rugby Heaven claimed Cleary may be open to switching to the 15-man code.
“There have been some rumours over the last couple of months that he is quite keen to come to rugby,” said Horan. “I don’t think it’s the right thing for Australian rugby to do — we have a lot of talent coming through — but if Nathan Cleary says he’s interested, you’ve got to have a coffee.”
Cleary, a four-time NRL Premiership winner, has also had his future questioned due to personal ties abroad, with his partner and Matildas star Mary Fowler currently based in the UK with Manchester City.
Should he make the leap, the Kangaroos, New South Wales, and Panthers half-back would likely be considered for the fly-half position — an area where the Wallabies already have options. Ben Donaldson has committed to Rugby Australia long-term, while Tom Lynagh is being groomed as a future playmaker.
Noah Lolesio remains in contention but may fall out of the frame following his move to Japan post-British & Irish Lions series.
While Schmidt isn’t actively pursuing Cleary, his comments suggest the Wallabies are keeping their options open, especially if the league star signals genuine interest in wearing gold.
