The Las Vegas Raiders are revamping their linebacker corps this offseason, announcing the signing of former Michigan standout and 2023 National Championship team captain Michael Barrett.
Barrett, initially a seventh-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2024, brings a pedigree of leadership from his tenure under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan—a connection that adds intrigue as Harbaugh now coaches the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers.
This move follows the departures of starters Robert Spillane (Patriots) and Divine Deablo (Falcons) in free agency. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who typically employs two-linebacker sets, now has veterans Elandon Roberts and Devin White as frontrunners for starting roles. The Raiders also recently added experienced linebacker Jaylon Smith, signaling a competitive camp ahead.
Barrett’s arrival coincides with upbeat momentum under new head coach Pete Carroll, who praised the defense’s early progress in OTAs.
“Jeremy Chinn and Elandon Roberts are elevating the group’s confidence,” Carroll noted, highlighting newcomers’ immediate impact.
Star defensive end Maxx Crosby echoed the enthusiasm, emphasizing the team’s infectious energy under Carroll:
“When you’ve got dawgs willing to push limits, you’ve got a shot.”
While injuries hampered the Raiders’ defensive unit last season, the blend of seasoned additions and a revitalized culture aims to position Las Vegas as a formidable contender in 2025. Barrett’s championship experience and ties to Harbaugh’s coaching tree could prove pivotal in a division ripe with narrative drama.
