Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress has sparked debate across the NFL landscape, asserting that the Steelers’ decision to trade George Pickens has weakened their roster.

In a candid analysis, Burress argued that Pickens possesses superior talent to newly acquired star DK Metcalf, labeling the move a step backward for the franchise.

Burress’ Bold Assessment

During a recent media appearance, Burress dissected the playing styles of both receivers, emphasizing Pickens’ potential when focused.

“I don’t believe DK Metcalf is a better wide receiver than George Pickens,” Burress stated. “When Pickens is locked in, he’s a top-five talent at the position. The Steelers must help him channel his focus to reach elite status.”

Statistical Comparison

George Pickens (2024 Season): Despite missing three games with a hamstring injury, Pickens tallied 59 receptions for 900 yards (15.3 yards per catch), narrowly missing his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. Over his first two NFL campaigns, he consistently averaged over 15 yards per reception.

DK Metcalf (Career): A two-time Pro Bowler, Metcalf has amassed 4,500+ receiving yards and 40 touchdowns since entering the league. The Seahawks standout recently inked a historic five-year, $150 million deal with Pittsburgh, marking the richest contract in Steelers history.

Trade Fallout and Team Implications

The Steelers’ decision to trade Pickens and sign Metcalf to a megadeal has divided analysts. While Metcalf brings proven production and star power, Burress contends Pittsburgh sacrificed untapped upside.

“This move doesn’t make them better,” he insisted. “Pickens’ ceiling is higher, but consistency is key.”

Injury and Consistency Concerns

Pickens’ 2024 campaign was marred by injuries and sporadic focus, raising questions about his reliability. Conversely, Metcalf’s durability and physicality (6’4”, 235 lbs) align with Pittsburgh’s traditional offensive identity.

The Steelers’ revamped receiving corps, now headlined by Metcalf and veteran Allen Robinson, faces pressure to elevate quarterback Will Howard’s play in 2025.

Looking Ahead

As Pittsburgh navigates offseason scrutiny, the spotlight remains on whether Metcalf can justify his record-breaking contract—and if Pickens will thrive in his new environment.

For Burress, the answer is clear: “Pittsburgh lost a diamond in the rough. Now, it’s on George to prove it.”
