As the 2024 NFL season came to a close, few expected the Las Vegas Raiders to emerge as a potential suitor for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

However, recent developments suggest the Raiders could be in the mix for the veteran signal-caller. Stafford, who has been granted permission to explore trade opportunities, remains open to returning to the Rams, but the Raiders are positioning themselves as a viable alternative.

Las Vegas, under the leadership of head coach Pete Carroll, is looking to address its offensive needs and build a winning team quickly. According to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, Stafford is a “name to watch” if the Rams decide to move him.

“Will the Raiders sign a QB and draft one? Sam Darnold is likely the best free-agent QB available, but there are other veterans for the new regime of Tom Brady, Pete Carroll, and John Spytek to consider,” Tafur wrote. “Kirk Cousins? Meh. The name to watch is Matthew Stafford if the Rams trade him.”

Carroll’s familiarity with Stafford from their NFC West battles during his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks could play a key role in negotiations. While Stafford would undoubtedly be an upgrade for the Raiders, the Rams’ asking price—reportedly a first-round pick—could be a hurdle.

Trading the No. 6 overall pick for a 37-year-old quarterback may be too steep, but if the Rams settle for a second-round pick, Stafford’s chances of joining the Raiders increase significantly.

The Raiders’ pursuit of Stafford underscores their urgency to solidify the quarterback position as they aim to compete in the 2025 season.
