Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Kendall Simmons did not mince words when discussing wide receiver George Pickens’ future with the team.
During an appearance on the Joba and the Mouth Show, Simmons warned that Pickens’ immense talent could be overshadowed by his off-field issues, which may ultimately jeopardize his career in Pittsburgh.
“If you’re gonna be a cancer, you’ve got to go,” Simmons said. “To me, it’s that simple. George has to own things—stuff he likes and stuff he doesn’t like. He has superstar ability; I really do believe that. But it’s the off-the-field stuff that’s going to keep him from being All-Pro and getting all those accolades he could achieve just based on his talent. I don’t see him being there for much longer. He’s going to wear out his welcome if he hasn’t already.”
Pickens, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, is considered the Steelers’ most talented receiver. However, his inconsistency on the field and ongoing controversies throughout the season have raised concerns. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has publicly addressed the situation, calling on Pickens to “grow up.”
The Steelers face a challenging decision this offseason. With Pickens as their primary offensive weapon at receiver, they must determine whether to offer him a contract extension or explore trade options. His potential remains undeniable, but Simmons’ comments underscore the importance of addressing his attitude and maturity.
Simmons’ blunt assessment highlights the high stakes for the Steelers. If Pickens can focus on his development and shed the baggage, he could fulfill his All-Pro potential. If not, Pittsburgh may be forced to part ways with its most dynamic receiver, leaving the team to rebuild its receiving corps in a critical offseason.
