New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has shed light on the decision to bring back Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator, emphasizing that it was head coach Mike Vrabel’s call and a move that could benefit the team’s future.
Kraft described the hire as a “win-win” situation, particularly for rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who reportedly supported the decision.
The Patriots’ decision to rehire McDaniels for his third stint with the team initially sparked mixed reactions among fans. Speculation arose that Kraft and team leadership may have overruled Vrabel to bring back the familiar face, given the franchise’s struggles since the departure of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. However, Kraft addressed these concerns in a recent interview with The Athletic.
“When we interviewed Mike and asked whom he might be interested in bringing on, without pause, his first choice was Josh McDaniels,” Kraft explained.
“He believed it would be something special for Drake [Maye]. Their experience and chemistry together are positive. From every angle, this is a win-win. It was Mike’s decision, and Josh was very excited. We hope to see the potential positives come to fruition.”
Kraft’s comments aimed to dispel rumors of internal conflict, confirming that Vrabel was fully behind the move. McDaniels, known for his success in developing quarterbacks and crafting productive offenses, is expected to play a key role in Maye’s growth and the team’s offensive resurgence.
While some skeptics remain unconvinced, Kraft’s transparency and Vrabel’s endorsement suggest the Patriots are banking on McDaniels’ experience to help steer the franchise back to its winning ways.
