Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin addressed the media on Wednesday to discuss a busy day for the franchise, highlighted by the acquisition of veteran forward Evander Kane from the Edmonton Oilers.
The media availability also covered the Abbotsford Canucks’ historic Calder Cup triumph and the team’s preparations for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.
Speaking on the addition of Kane, Allvin emphasized the forward’s ability to bolster the Canucks’ depth and add grit to their middle-six.
“Every team is looking to be harder to play against,” said Allvin. “When a player like this comes available at this cost, we felt we had a chance to upgrade our top-nine and become a harder team to play against.”
Kane, a Vancouver native entering his 17th NHL season, has played in 930 career games. Though he sat out the regular season last year, he returned to contribute during the playoffs for the Oilers.
Allvin shared that Kane was thrilled to join the Canucks, noting he spoke with him as he was spending time with his children at a pool.
“Evander is one of those guys who you hate to play against and love to have on your team,”
Allvin added, confirming head coach Adam Foote was involved in the acquisition process.
Turning attention to the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, Allvin said the club is expected to retain its 15th overall selection. While he hasn’t held serious talks about trading up, he acknowledged exploring the possibility of moving down the draft order.
“There’s excitement about players who might be available. We’ll see if talks heat up over the next 48 hours.”
Allvin also took time to congratulate the Abbotsford Canucks, Vancouver’s AHL affiliate, for capturing their first Calder Cup title. He highlighted the growth of prospects like Kirill Kudryavtsev, Ty Mueller, Victor Mancini, and returning players Arshdeep Bains, Linus Karlsson, and Max Sasson.
“It’s a great achievement. I’m proud of that group and the fans in Abbotsford,” said Allvin,
noting how internal competition for NHL roster spots will now intensify.
With Kane’s media availability set for the coming days and the draft looming on Friday at 4:00 p.m. PT, the Canucks are poised for a pivotal offseason.
