New South Wales rugby league officials are calling for Ashley Klein to be removed as referee for the State of Origin decider, following a highly controversial performance in Game II in Perth.

Klein’s officiating came under intense scrutiny after Queensland’s 26-6 win over the Blues, amid a staggering 10-2 penalty count that heavily favoured the Maroons.

Klein had the penalty count at 8-0 by halftime, which significantly influenced the game’s momentum and left NSW with a mountain too steep to climb. Although Queensland displayed dominance and the Blues were guilty of several moments of ill-discipline, many within the game argue the disparity in officiating was too severe for a match of such magnitude.

Even Queensland legend Corey Parker expressed disbelief, telling SENQ Breakfast, “I just don’t think you need 12 penalties and 10 of those going in the way of one team.” He admitted that while the penalties may have been technically correct, the lopsided nature raised concerns for the integrity of the contest.

Blues legend Greg Alexander acknowledged that many penalties against NSW were warranted but questioned the lack of any infringements from Queensland in the first half.

“Queensland in the first half was zero,” he said. “That’s the point.”

NSW coach Laurie Daley refrained from openly criticising the officiating, saying:

“I can’t tell you what I honestly think, so I’m not gonna say anything.”

Fans and analysts have questioned Klein’s repeated appointment to high-stakes games despite frequent criticism. He was also under fire for over-officiating in Game I, although the penalty count was more balanced on that occasion.

With the series now level and the decider set for Sydney in three weeks, pressure is mounting on the NRL to reconsider its referee selection. While Queensland may push to retain Klein after their Game II success, officials face a delicate decision that could shape the credibility and fairness of the Origin finale.
