Sam Walker’s agent, Clinton Schifcofske, has moved swiftly to clarify comments that sparked speculation the Sydney Roosters were backing away from a potential move for Manly Sea Eagles captain Daly Cherry-Evans.

The remarks, made during ABC’s coverage of Manly’s shock 28-8 loss to the Gold Coast Titans on Friday night, were interpreted by some as an inside revelation that the Roosters were no longer pursuing the veteran playmaker. However, Schifcofske insists the comments were misconstrued and taken out of context.

He stressed that he was not speaking from any privileged position or with any inside knowledge regarding the Roosters’ recruitment plans, particularly in relation to Cherry-Evans. Instead, he was offering an opinion based on the Titans’ need for an experienced halfback — suggesting a player of Cherry-Evans’ calibre would suit that club, not implying the Roosters had cooled their interest.

“I was only commenting on the speculation that’s already been around,” Schifcofske said, affirming that his intent was never to suggest the Roosters were pulling out of talks or had changed direction. “I have no knowledge of what the Roosters are doing.”

The comments were later brought up during the post-match press conference, catching Cherry-Evans off-guard. The veteran responded with calm indifference:

“No, I don’t sort of understand that stuff… All I can do is control my footy at Manly. Speculation will be speculation.”

Still, the narrative continues to swirl, especially as no formal announcement has been made by the Roosters or Cherry-Evans regarding his future. The possibility of him joining the Bondi club remains a hot topic, though many have questioned the logic given his patchy form in 2025.

Critics suggest the move could hinder the development of current Roosters playmaker Sam Walker, as well as rising talents Hugo Savala and Sandon Smith — the latter expected to leave the club at season’s end.

Until a decision is made public, the speculation surrounding Cherry-Evans’ future — and the Roosters’ strategic direction — is unlikely to fade.
