Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner could soon become the highest-paid player in NHL history, with four teams reportedly preparing massive contract offers ahead of the 2025 free agency period.

According to The Athletic’s James Mirtle, the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Utah Mammoth all have the cap space—upwards of $20 million—to table offers exceeding $14 million annually for the elite winger.

These four franchises are eager to make a splash in free agency, and Marner, one of the most dynamic two-way forwards in the NHL, is seen as a transformational figure for any roster.

A $14 million-per-year deal would eclipse the current record set by Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl, making Marner the richest player in league history in terms of annual salary.

However, there’s a significant caveat: none of the four front-running bidders can guarantee a deep playoff run, something Marner is reportedly prioritizing after Toronto’s years of postseason struggles.

Insiders suggest the 27-year-old may lean toward more competitive teams such as the Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, or Los Angeles Kings, even if it means accepting a slightly smaller deal.

Marner, who registered 97 points this past season, has not made a final decision, and with free agency opening on July 1, speculation is mounting. Whether he opts for legacy and championship contention or chases a groundbreaking payday will be a defining moment in this offseason.

Regardless of his choice, Marner’s next contract is expected to set a new benchmark in NHL economics—potentially reshaping the salary structure for top-tier players league-wide.
