The New York Jets officially appointed Tanner Engstrand as their new offensive coordinator on Friday, marking yet another hire from the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff.
Engstrand, 42, had been with the Lions since 2020, serving as their passing game coordinator for the past three seasons. His move follows that of Aaron Glenn, Detroit’s former defensive coordinator, who was recently named the Jets’ head coach. Additionally, New York added former Lions tight ends coach Steve Heiden to oversee their offensive line.
Engstrand played a key role in Detroit’s offensive success last season, helping the team lead the NFL in scoring offense (33.2 points per game) while ranking second in both total offense (409.5 yards per game) and passing offense (263.2 yards per game).
While this will be his first stint as an NFL offensive coordinator, Engstrand previously held the role at the University of San Diego from 2011-17. A former quarterback at Grossmont College and San Diego State, he was college teammates with current Jets general manager Darren Mougey in 2004.
As Engstrand steps into his new role, the Jets must decide on their quarterback situation, with 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers having previously stated that if he continues playing in 2025, he wants to remain in New York.
