Wimbledon Report: Stars Confront Tennis’ Mental Toll Amidst High-Stakes Battles
The hallowed lawns of Wimbledon have become the backdrop for a raw and poignant discussion about mental health in professional tennis, ignited by World No. 3 Alexander Zverev’s deeply personal confession following his shock first-round exit.
Zverev’s Struggles Laid Bare
Zverev, still seeking his maiden Wimbledon title, suffered a devastating five-set defeat to Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
In the aftermath, the three-time Grand Slam champion revealed an ongoing battle with mental health, describing profound loneliness and an inability to find joy in life.
“I need therapy,” Zverev admitted,
tracing his struggles back to his Australian Open final loss to Jannik Sinner earlier this year. Since that Melbourne defeat, Zverev endured a six-tournament drought without consecutive wins before briefly finding form on clay.
Despite reaching finals in Stuttgart and Halle, his Wimbledon collapse underscored deeper turmoil. “I’m lonely,” he confessed, highlighting the isolating pressures faced by elite athletes.
Raducanu: “You Lose Every Week”
When asked about Zverev’s situation and finding joy in the sport, Britain’s Emma Raducanu offered a sobering perspective after her impressive straight-sets victory over 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova.
“I think tennis is a really difficult sport. You lose every week pretty much,” Raducanu stated. “Out of however many tournaments, 26 weeks a year, you’re pretty much losing 26 weeks a year.”
The 2021 US Open champion emphasized resilience through connection and process:
“Trying to surround yourself with good people… trying to focus on the process as much as possible. It’s really difficult to take your joy from the results. Because it’s so up and down.”
Her words echoed Aryna Sabalenka’s earlier advice to Zverev, stressing the vital need to open up to loved ones to avoid being “destroyed” by internal struggles.
Raducanu’s Daunting Challenge: Sabalenka Looms
Raducanu’s path now leads directly to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a blockbuster third-round encounter. Sabalenka, chasing her fourth title of 2025 and seeking her first Wimbledon final after semi-final runs in 2021 and 2023, presents a monumental hurdle.

Sabalenka won their only prior meeting at Indian Wells in 2024. Yet, optimism surrounds Raducanu. Tennis legend Tracy Austin, commentating for the BBC, believes an upset is possible:
“I would say that she has a chance to beat Sabalenka… If she produces a performance like the way she did against Marketa Vondrousova, she can pull off the biggest upset of the tournament.”
Austin noted Sabalenka looked “good, didn’t look unbelievable” in her opening match.
Other Wimbledon Drama: Tsitsipas Exit Sparks Ivanisevic Fury
Elsewhere, Stefanos Tsitsipas’s Wimbledon ended ignominiously with a first-round retirement due to a back injury, trailing Valentin Royer. While Tsitsipas described his new coaching relationship with Goran Ivanisevic as “great,” the Croat unleashed a scathing critique.
“I’ve never seen such an underprepared player in my life,”
Ivanisevic told Sport Klub, questioning Tsitsipas’s commitment despite his desire to succeed.
“He has to resolve his back issue… If he solves some things outside of tennis then he has a chance… If not, then he has no chance.”
Tsitsipas’s ranking has plummeted to No. 26 following early exits at the Australian Open and French Open.
Sabalenka’s Quest
Sabalenka, who has lost Grand Slam finals to Madison Keys (Australian Open) and Coco Gauff (French Open) this year, remains focused on finally conquering SW19.
Her powerful game and experience make her the favorite, but Raducanu’s resurgence and the electric home crowd guarantee a captivating Centre Court showdown.
As the tournament progresses, the candid revelations about mental health from stars like Zverev and Raducanu serve as a stark reminder of the intense psychological battles waged alongside the physical ones on tennis’s most prestigious stage.
