The Sydney Roosters have taken decisive action to secure one of their most promising young forwards, re-signing Naufahu Whyte on a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2029 NRL season.

Whyte, 23, has enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2025, becoming the cornerstone of the Roosters’ forward pack in the absence of veteran leader Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. With the New Zealand international set to come off-contract in 2026, the newly-formed Perth Bears were reportedly lining up a poaching raid, prompting the Roosters to act swiftly to retain their rising star.

In 12 appearances this season, Whyte has delivered standout numbers — averaging 151 running metres and 29 tackles per game, with 34 tackle breaks to his name — solidifying his status as a dominant presence in the middle of the park.

Speaking after the extension was confirmed, Whyte expressed his deep loyalty to the club:

“The Roosters have been my home since I moved over from Auckland as a teenager. It’s a blessing to be part of this club and an honour every time I pull on the jersey. I’m excited to keep learning from Trent [Robinson], working hard alongside my brothers, and building something special together.”

Roosters head coach Trent Robinson praised Whyte’s relentless work ethic and team-first mentality:

“Fahu is a competitor with a deep hunger to improve. He’s worked incredibly hard to earn his place and is a player you love to coach. Not only is he a valuable asset on the field, but he’s also a genuinely good person, so we’re thrilled to have him locked in for the long term.”

Whyte’s commitment adds to an increasingly formidable Roosters roster, which will also welcome star hooker Reece Robson next season. With 50 NRL games and three Kiwis caps already to his name, Whyte’s future appears as bright as the Roosters’ ambitions.
