Selwyn Cobbo’s future with the Brisbane Broncos has been thrown into serious doubt following the club’s decision to secure contract extensions for three key players in a retention drive worth a reported $3.5 million.
According to The Courier Mail, Brisbane have re-signed captain Adam Reynolds, star centre Kotoni Staggs, and promising young hooker Blake Mozer—leaving little room under the salary cap to offer Cobbo a competitive deal.

The 23-year-old, currently earning around $650,000 per season, is now unlikely to remain at Red Hill unless he accepts a significant pay cut.
Reynolds rejected a two-year, $1.5 million deal from the Wests Tigers to stay with the Broncos on a one-year extension, reportedly sacrificing up to $1 million in the process. Coach Michael Maguire praised the veteran halfback’s loyalty, saying:
“Reyno has shown that he wants to stay and achieve what he came to the club to achieve, which is winning a premiership.”
Staggs, meanwhile, has committed to a three-year extension worth roughly $800,000 annually. The 2024 Allan Langer Award winner has also been elevated to the club’s leadership group this season under Maguire, who lauded the centre’s growing maturity and influence both on and off the field.
Mozer, 21, who has played nine NRL games since debuting in 2023, also inked a two-year extension despite missing the current season so far due to a pre-season shoulder injury.
While the Broncos are celebrating the retention spree, Cobbo’s position within the team has continued to deteriorate. Dropped for the round 14 clash against the Titans, he remains out of the squad for this week’s game against Cronulla, with Josiah Karapani impressing in his place.
With rival clubs including the Dragons, Roosters, and Tigers reportedly circling—and expansion sides like Perth and Papua New Guinea watching closely—Cobbo may soon be on the move. His camp has already begun sounding out interest, with the versatile back believed to be seeking a fullback role and potentially commanding upwards of $900,000 annually on the open market.
Cobbo may yet opt to remain at the Broncos on a one-year, lower-value deal. However, with Brisbane’s salary cap tightening and younger talent stepping up, his days at the club appear numbered.
