Panthers determined to fix defensive frailties in Warriors clash as senior players admit shortcomings

Penrith Panthers forward Moses Leota has admitted the team’s senior players “didn’t do the job” in their disappointing Round 12 loss to Newcastle, as the defending premiers gear up for another tough challenge without their State of Origin stars in Saturday’s clash against the New Zealand Warriors.

The Panthers are fresh from their Round 15 bye but remain haunted by their 26-18 defeat to the Knights in Bathurst, where they trailed 24-0 at halftime and missed a staggering 55 tackles.

The absence of Origin stars Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Brian To’o, Dylan Edwards, and Liam Martin was clearly felt, with Leota now pledging that the team must lift defensively this week.

“We weren’t defending well as a team (against the Knights). We pride ourselves on our defence, but in that game, it didn’t look like that was the case,” Leota said. “Hopefully, us leaders can help all the young boys and push them through.”

Coach Ivan Cleary is unlikely to risk his Origin players in Auckland, confirming most will not back up from the Perth clash. Only Lindsay Smith, who won’t play in Game II, is expected to feature.

The stakes are high, with Penrith sitting just outside the top eight. The Warriors, meanwhile, are surging in form and in the race for the minor premiership, presenting a major test for Penrith’s depth and resilience.

Veteran Isaiah Papali’i, who missed the Newcastle loss due to injury, echoed Leota’s sentiments and stressed the importance of leadership.

“As the older players, we have to lead from the front,” he said. “This game is pretty massive for us as a whole club. There are guys who will get opportunities that they don’t usually see.”

Papali’i also revealed he became a father that same weekend, calling his injury a “blessing in disguise” that allowed him to be present for his son’s birth.

With a weakened lineup, the Panthers are drawing inspiration from teams like the Roosters, who have secured impressive wins without their Origin talent.

Now, Penrith will look to prove their premiership credentials by rediscovering their famed defensive grit—even without their biggest stars.
