Former New South Wales Blues star Nathan Hindmarsh has publicly expressed his disappointment over Matt Burton’s continued omission from the NSW Origin squad, following the latest team announcement that saw Mitchell Moses sidelined and a replacement named.

Burton, who has regularly featured as the 18th man for the Blues, was once again overlooked for a starting role, a decision that has sparked debate among rugby league pundits and fans alike.

Speaking on Triple M’s Rocks Footy, Hindmarsh voiced his frustration, suggesting that Burton had earned a chance to finally take the field in the Origin arena.

“I’ve got to be a little bit disappointed for Burton as well… He’s been carried as 18th man before, just give him a run,” Hindmarsh stated. He went on to say that Burton’s playing style and skillset would likely complement star halfback Nathan Cleary well, adding, “I think his combination with Cleary would’ve worked out alright.”

The Blues’ decision to go in another direction despite Burton’s consistent presence in the extended squad has raised questions about the team’s selection criteria and long-term plans.

Burton, known for his strong kicking game and versatility in the backline, remains a fan-favourite and a highly regarded talent.

With the State of Origin series intensifying, the scrutiny on player selections has never been greater. Hindmarsh’s comments add weight to growing calls from sections of the rugby league community who believe Burton’s opportunity is long overdue.

Whether this will influence future selections remains to be seen, but the debate is far from over.
