Brisbane Broncos outside back Selwyn Cobbo is reportedly eyeing a potential switch to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, as uncertainty looms over his future at Red Hill beyond the 2025 NRL season.

Off-contract at season’s end and recently demoted to the QLD Cup, Cobbo has drawn interest from multiple NRL clubs including the North Queensland Cowboys, Sydney Roosters, and several unnamed suitors. However, the most significant development is his reported dialogue with Rabbitohs head coach Wayne Bennett about a possible move to Sydney.

The 22-year-old, previously seen as a rising star in the Broncos’ ranks, has fallen out of favour under coach Michael Maguire, who dropped him last week citing performance standards. His replacement, Josiah Karapani, impressed in Cobbo’s absence with a double, further reducing Cobbo’s chances of a swift return to the first-grade squad.

“There are standards we are setting here,” Maguire stated. “Karapani got his opportunity, and Selly has a few things to work on in his game.”

Despite his struggles, Cobbo remains a highly sought-after talent and is expected to attract strong market interest—especially given Brisbane’s looming salary cap crunch. With high-priced contracts locked in for stars like Ezra Mam, Reece Walsh, Patrick Carrigan, and Payne Haas, the Broncos may struggle to retain both Cobbo and fellow centre Kotoni Staggs.

While Cobbo is believed to prefer staying in Brisbane, his talks with Bennett—who coached him at Origin level and during the Broncos’ earlier years—suggest a reunion could be on the cards if a deal with South Sydney eventuates.

With the Rabbitohs seeking to rebuild under Bennett, Cobbo’s potential signing could add both depth and firepower to their backline, especially as they look to move forward from a disappointing 2025 campaign.
