The Queensland Maroons decision to name Ezra Mam in their extended squad for Game Two of the State of Origin series has sparked intense backlash, with critics labelling the move a tone-deaf affront to fans.

Maroons coach Billy Slater and Queensland Rugby League (QRL) CEO Ben Ikin are under fire for selecting the Brisbane Broncos five-eighth, who has only played three NRL matches this season after serving a nine-game suspension.

Mam’s ban and $120,000 fine stemmed from a serious off-field incident involving a car crash while driving under the influence of drugs and without a valid licence.

Despite the controversy, Slater defended the 22-year-old’s inclusion, saying on Monday, “He is the right person for that position right now,” and adding that Mam’s presence would benefit the squad heading into the must-win Perth clash.

However, many in the rugby league community are not convinced. Veteran journalist Phil Rothfield condemned the selection on NRL 360, saying, “Slater and Ikin have not read the room under these circumstances.” He argued that allowing Mam back into the NRL was already a concession — selecting him for Origin represents a further insult.

“You saw Mam run onto Brookvale Oval and the entire crowd booed him. He is very, very lucky to be playing NRL football this year. But to put him on the highest stage of our game — extended bench or not — is going to the fans, ‘up yours’,” Rothfield said.

The decision has reignited debate about accountability and the message such selections send. While Mam’s on-field talent is undisputed, critics argue that recent actions should have disqualified him from representing Queensland at the sport’s highest level — at least for now.
