In a promising turn for Tennessee football, quarterback Joey Aguilar has been named among the top 25 quarterbacks in the country heading into the 2025 college football season, according to a recent ranking by College Football Network.

Aguilar lands at No. 25 on the list, signaling high expectations for a player who has yet to make his first start in a Volunteers uniform.

Aguilar’s journey to Rocky Top has been anything but conventional. Initially set to join UCLA ahead of the 2025 season, his plans shifted dramatically following the unexpected departure of former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

This opened the door for Aguilar’s transfer to Knoxville, where he is now expected to take the reins of Josh Heupel’s high-octane offense.

Despite his lack of starting experience for the Volunteers, Aguilar’s talent and leadership potential have earned him national recognition and internal confidence. At Appalachian State, Aguilar displayed strong mechanics, decision-making, and arm strength, traits that analysts believe will translate well in the Southeastern Conference under Heupel’s quarterback-friendly system.

Tennessee fans will get their first live look at Aguilar in action when the Volunteers open their 2025 campaign against Syracuse on Saturday, August 30, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game is set for a noon kickoff and will be broadcast nationally on ABC.

With Aguilar now in the national spotlight and expectations mounting, the Volunteers are hoping he can steer the program to new heights in the upcoming season.
