As rugby league fans anticipate a compelling clash between the Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers this weekend, all eyes will be on the emotional reunion of former teammates Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai — two stars who once shared the same jersey and a remarkable run of success.
Cleary, the Panthers’ halfback and co-captain, will line up against Luai for the first time at NRL level when Penrith visits CommBank Stadium on Sunday. The match marks a new chapter in their storied relationship, which spans over a decade and includes four NRL premierships.

The duo’s history dates back to their childhood days, when Cleary played for Penrith Brothers and Luai for rivals St Marys Saints.
“They used to beat us 50-nil almost every time,” Cleary recalled. “One time we got them, and I think he (Luai) might’ve cried.”
Now leading the Tigers as their new chief playmaker, Luai has helped breathe life into a club that’s languished at the bottom of the ladder in recent years. Cleary acknowledged Luai’s transformative impact.
“Just his energy alone has lifted a lot of players around him,” he said. “That’s probably his greatest asset.”
Though they’re no longer in daily contact, Cleary said the bond remains strong.
“We don’t talk all the time but whenever we do or see each other, it’s always love. You can’t take away what we’ve achieved together.”
Still, Cleary admitted the match would feel “weird” given their shared journey through the Panthers’ junior system and their dominance as a halves pairing. But as the whistle blows on Sunday, nostalgia will take a back seat to competition — and perhaps a little friendly banter.
“If he starts the chirp, we’ll see,” Cleary said with a grin.
