The Phoenix Suns have officially appointed Jordan Ott as their new head coach, concluding a rapid but thorough search to replace Mike Budenholzer.

The announcement comes just days after multiple reports identified Ott as the frontrunner, edging out fellow Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant.

Ott, 39, brings a strong résumé of NBA experience, including assistant coaching stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and most recently the Cleveland Cavaliers.

During his lone season in Cleveland, Ott worked under head coach Kenny Atkinson and played a pivotal role in the development of star forward Evan Mobley, who earned All-NBA honors and was named Defensive Player of the Year this past season.

His success with Mobley was a central reason for the Suns’ decision, as the franchise shifts focus toward long-term growth and internal player development.

“Jordan embodies the culture of excellence and accountability we’re going to prioritize,” said Suns owner Mat Ishbia in the team’s official press release. “He is young, hungry, and ready to be an NBA head coach.”

Ott’s hiring also reinforces a web of personal and professional connections, including ties to Michigan State, where both Ishbia and new general manager Brian Gregory attended. That shared background reportedly helped form the foundation for Ott’s candidacy.

Gregory praised Ott’s leadership, calling him “a brilliant mind” and emphasizing his relentless work ethic and ability to build a cohesive identity rooted in toughness and discipline.

Ott echoed those sentiments, promising to instill a team-first culture defined by hard work and unity.

Ott agreed to a four-year deal and becomes the Suns’ fourth head coach in as many seasons. The franchise is entering a pivotal summer following a disappointing first-round playoff exit and faces serious roster decisions, including Kevin Durant’s uncertain status and Bradley Beal’s burdensome contract.

Ott’s appointment signals a strategic pivot from chasing star power to building sustainable success through structure and culture.

With Ott in place, the New York Knicks are now the lone NBA team without a head coach as the offseason intensifies.
