In a seismic shift for college football recruiting, five-star EDGE prospect Trenton Henderson—ranked among the top players in the 2026 class—has verbally committed to the LSU Tigers, bypassing heavy interest from Michigan, Florida, USC, and Auburn.

The announcement comes just days after speculation swirled about Michigan’s strong positioning, but LSU’s relentless pursuit and program vision ultimately won the coveted defender’s allegiance.

Henderson, a 6’5″, 250-pound force off the edge, revealed his decision during an exclusive interview, citing LSU’s “unmatched defensive legacy” and transformative culture as pivotal factors.

“I’ve always respected LSU’s ability to develop game-changers,” Henderson said. “Their track record speaks for itself. From Arden Key to Harold Perkins—they mold legends. When I visited Baton Rouge, it felt like home. The coaches showed me exactly how I’d thrive in their system, and the energy there is something you can’t replicate.”

While Henderson had previously praised Michigan’s academic support and defensive line production, LSU’s staff—led by head coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Blake Baker—closed the gap with a personalized pitch.

Henderson emphasized his bond with LSU’s coaches, noting:

“They treated me like family from day one. We talked weekly, and they didn’t just sell me on football. They laid out a plan for my growth as a player and a person. That trust sealed the deal.”

The Tigers’ surge in Henderson’s recruitment overshadowed his upcoming official visits to Michigan (June 6), Florida, and USC. Though he acknowledged the Wolverines’ appeal, he admitted LSU’s recent visit “changed everything.”

“Seeing Death Valley in person, meeting the players, and understanding the standard here—it’s a different level,” Henderson added. “I want to be part of a program that competes for championships every year, and LSU checks every box.”

Henderson’s commitment marks a monumental win for LSU’s 2026 class, which now boasts its first five-star cornerstone. Analysts project his explosive pass-rushing skills to make an immediate impact in the SEC. “Trenton’s versatility and motor are rare,” said 247Sports’ recruiting director. “He’s the type of player who can redefine a defense.”

While Henderson had initially planned to announce his decision in November, he accelerated his timeline after “feeling 100% certain” about LSU. The Tigers’ faithful erupted on social media, with fans dubbing him the “next great LSU Tiger” in a wave of celebratory posts.

For Michigan, the loss stings, but the Wolverines remain in contention for other elite 2026 targets. As for Henderson, his focus is now clear:

“I’m ready to bring a natty back to Baton Rouge. Geaux Tigers!”
