Manchester City are reportedly showing serious interest in signing Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika as part of their summer rebuild, with key players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva potentially heading for the exit.
According to reports from Soccernet and relayed by Sempre Milan, City are exploring a €20 million move for the 23-year-old Nigerian midfielder to reinforce their options in the middle of the park.
This move comes at a time of transition for the Premier League champions, who are preparing for significant changes both on and off the field. Hugo Viana is set to replace long-serving sporting director Txiki Begiristain, signaling a new era at the Etihad Stadium. The need for fresh blood in midfield is evident following a season where City fell short in their quest for both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.
Kevin De Bruyne has reportedly grown frustrated over the nature of recent contract negotiations and is contemplating a departure. Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva appears likely to leave as well, with reports suggesting the club no longer sees him in their long-term plans. Interest from Benfica and clubs in the Saudi Pro League could accelerate his exit.
Matheus Nunes may also leave the club after Pep Guardiola hinted that the former Wolves man is unlikely to play in his preferred midfield role at City. Despite Mateo Kovacic enjoying a productive campaign and Nico Gonzalez impressing since his £50 million January arrival from Porto, Guardiola is still keen on adding depth and quality.
Onyedika, who has over two years remaining on his current contract with Club Brugge, is reportedly seeking a move this summer. His recent change in representation is believed to be part of a broader effort to secure a transfer. Apart from City, European giants like Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Porto, and AC Milan are all said to be monitoring the Nigerian international’s situation.
However, a move to Manchester City may not be straightforward. With Rodri expected to return from injury and Gonzalez continuing to adapt well to the squad, City’s need for another defensive midfielder may not be urgent. Other positions could take priority in the summer transfer window.
Nonetheless, the club’s interest in Onyedika reflects their broader strategy of preparing for a future without some of their longstanding midfield stars.
